This may be the first year I haven’t read an obscene amount of books in a long time. It makes me sad in some ways. It also makes me question what is it about stories this year that really pulled me in so whole-heartedly when I was out of my on again, off again, reading slump.
According to Goodreads, I read, or attempted to read (reading slump, remember?) approximately 71 books, usually not counting comfort re-reads (or J. Bree’s Broken Bonds would be listed at least a half dozen times).
But, for some reason, I realized that there were only a few that I remember being OBSESSED with. Like 10/10 would scream from the top of the rooftops about.
And here they are.
As you can imagine, per usual, there is quite a bit of romance, readers.
Divine Rivals & Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross was a magic escapade through a historical-esque fantasy I wanted to wrap myself up in. Utterly divine.
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston was a breath of fresh air in romance. And I love a good magical realism plot-line with characters I can love and root for.
The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston (And everything else written by Ashley Poston really) as she likely became one of my top two authors of the year and all time with her magical romances that made me remember the kind of reader and writer I love and want to be.
The Rom-commers by Katherine Center was what made me realize that I love a good audiobook once and awhile and Katherine Center is up there with my favorite authors this year and of all time. This story was laugh out loud funny centering around two screen writers attempting to write what I liked to imagine was the perfect early 2000s rom com.

A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston brought me to romance reading roots. Sure, life isn’t a love story, but it is YOUR story.
Hello Stranger by Katherine Center was a hilarious rom com and so unique as I was introduced to what face-blindness is. I go back and forth between this and Rom-commers being my favorite of Katherine Center’s so far as I work through her backlist.
Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood which I put off so long until I needed an audiobook on long commutes. It’s like if a romance had a baby with The Queen’s Gambit in the BEST way. This one might be my favorite of Ali Hazelwood’s novels (hot take, perhaps?).
What You Wish For by Katherine Center brings my library loving heart to life with a small town school and a quirky and adorable love story surrounded in emotion and trauma that you definitely can understand if you have ever worked in a school or with children.
When in December by Kendra Mase is my own book that I must include as a favorite as I think about Poppy and Aaron’s emotional love story during the holidays which I hope you’ll pick up if you haven’t already.
