Wait a second? What?
It’s June?
I barely have put my sweaters away after a false spring/summer last month and now we are already into the happenings of summer and somehow this is very hard for me to wrap my head around. But I guess I shouldn’t be complaining. I have been waiting for these kinds of days since the deep gray winter.
Beggars can’t be choosers?
Substitute teaching is officially over, I’m attempting to jump back into writing and figuring out how to do that (spoiler: I don’t think I’ll be able to do it completely on my own at the moment which is okay, but we’re working on it), and also finding some really good books to read even though my eyes have been way bigger than my reading appetite whenever I walk into the library and leave with at least half dozen new releases.
Problem? Well… It really depends on how you look at it, isn’t it?
What I’m Reading
My reading list has also been doubled just by the wonderful articles here on Substack that I also think that you should read and tell me what you thought of them!
On the book front, I have finished reading Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors. I really enjoyed it. The characterization was beautiful and writing itself felt so complete in a sense that I haven’t read a novel that felt both so contained in a gorgeous way in a while. If that makes sense.
I’ve been on a literary fiction kick lately, so I definitely want to pick up Mellors debut novel, Cleopatra and Frankenstien, as well soon since I’ve heard some really great things.
Last REPORT I asked: Maybe I am seeing why so many people rave about this one and Coco Mellors?
The answer is absolutely, yes, I do.
Of course, the new Emily Henry book is also on deck for me STILL. I planned on picking it up post-Blue Sisters, though instead I went to the library and am about halfway through One Golden Summer by Carley Fortune.
I really love the book so far. It feels like you are curled up in the evening on a warm summer day outside with a glass of sauv blanc next to you, perfect cool and crisp and a little fun.
The characters are so cute and sassy and I am happy about how much I am into their story even though I need to carve out some more reading time to plow through it hopefully by the end of this week.
On my library pile I also have quite a few more books on deck including…
Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood since I mean, I have to read the new Ali Hazelwood, right?
A sort of out of character for me thriller/mystery: The God of the Woods by Liz Moore.
And I’m really looking forward to the new Ashley Poston coming out soon! She has become a top author for me and I can’t wait for Sounds Like Love coming out June 17, 2025. So soon!
On Writing
Words have been all over the place.
I’ve been working on gettin back on track. Oddly enough, the movie Kiki’s Delivery Service helped a bit.
In my last REPORT here I said: I’ve been trying to quiet the voice that says, “You should know what you’re writing.” I don’t. But I’m showing up to the page, even if it’s with uncertainty in one hand and caffeine in the other.
I feel like I’m still there, but a little more confident. So we are moving in the right direction.
Obsessed With
This dress from Hill House, though I can’t bring myself to purchase it.
The idea of really putting effort into the decor of our home even though we rent. I have been looking at curtains, rugs, and peel and stick tiles though haven’t made any decisions yet on the worthwhile nature of it all.
The idea of estate sales.
This hair product that has been making my hair look so smooth! It’s a game changer much like I’m hoping this filtered shower head will be after the past year of hard water.
I just finished watching Sirens on Netflix. It was oddly really good. I went in unsure as to what to expect. Cults? Sisterhood? Trauma? A strange commentary on pastels and Lily Pulitzer? It was kind of everything and none of that, but overall a very binge-able watch. Highly recommend if you are looking for a quick show to watch coming in at only five episodes.
Happy List
Again, taking my morning coffee outside. Sometimes wrapped up in a cozy blanket to stay warm when the mornings are still chilly out.
Morning writing time- however fruitful.
The duck couple are still living well on the ponds nearby. In fact, I’ve now found that there are THREE duck couples. Two of which have had little baby ducklings. Our original couple as of now seem to be happily child-free ;)
Watched all three How to Train Your Dragon movies with Mystery Man who had never seen them. I’d never seen the final one which was so sad and cute all at once.
Looking Forward
So here we are going into June. I expected it to feel a little lighter and brighter, but we roll with what we got right now it seems.
Tell me now, what are you reading and enjoying. I can’t wait to chat more about it in the comments.
Until next week, let me know how yours has been!
